Continuous passive motion after the ream and run and after total shoulder arthroplasty

In most cases we use continuous passive motion (CPM) after the ream and run procedure and after total shoulder arthroplasty. This is because shoulders tend to get stiff after major surgery and the healing process begins immediately after the operation.

As can be seen from the video below (which was taken in the recovery room immediately after surgery), the motion is gentle and consist of flexion and rotation. This is not a stretching exercise that takes the shoulder the limit of motion, but rather an easy back and forth - just enough to keep things moving.

Interestingly, many patients find their shoulder is more comfortable in the continuous passive motion machine than in a sling.
